During microneedling, your practitioner uses very fine needles to make tiny punctures in the upper layers of your skin. Your skin responds with its own repair process, which includes producing new collagen. At Aevum Clinic on the Westzijde in Zaandam, we offer microneedling for skin that may look smoother and fresher after a series of treatments.
Start: at the start of your appointment we discuss your skin, your wishes, your health and any medication, and look together at whether microneedling suits you. Cleansing: your skin is thoroughly cleansed and disinfected. Needling: we work with sterile single-use needles and adjust the depth to the skin of each area. Soothing: afterwards we apply a soothing skincare product to the skin. Advice: you receive aftercare advice and we discuss whether a follow-up treatment makes sense.
Microneedling may suit you if you would like your skin to look smoother or fresher, for example with: fine lines; enlarged pores; a dull or uneven skin texture; the appearance of old, shallow acne scars
Microneedling is not suitable, or should be postponed, if you: are pregnant or breastfeeding; have active acne, inflammation or an infection in the area to be treated; have a cold sore; tend to form thick scars (keloids); have used isotretinoin (an acne medication) in the past 6 to 12 months; use blood thinners; have diabetes that is not well controlled; have eczema or psoriasis in the area to be treated
Microneedling usually works as a series. Three to six treatments are often needed, on average four to six weeks apart, so your skin can recover in between. This varies from person to person: we agree together at your appointment how many treatments make sense for you and at what intervals.
Straight after the treatment your skin is red and may feel slightly swollen or tight, as after a day in the sun. This usually fades within one to three days. Any improvement appears gradually, in the weeks after a treatment and especially after a series.
Below are general guidelines. We discuss together after the treatment which aftercare advice suits your skin.
Microneedling punctures the skin. For that reason, the RIVM (the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) counts it among the salon treatments with an increased risk. Redness, swelling, a tight feeling and sometimes pinpoint bleeding or light peeling in the first few days are normal.
Preferably come without make-up. Stop using retinol, acids and scrubs a few days beforehand, and do not have the treatment on sunburnt or freshly tanned skin. Avoid planning an important occasion for the day after.
