Laser hair removal in Zaandam

Shaving, waxing or plucking, only for it all to start again a few days later? Laser hair removal in Zaandam tackles unwanted hair at the root. At Aevum Clinic on the Westzijde we treat areas including the face, underarms, arms, legs, bikini line, and back and chest, using laser or IPL technology.

How does laser hair removal work?

The light from the laser or IPL is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. There it turns into heat, which weakens the hair root while sparing the surrounding skin as much as possible.

Who is laser hair removal suitable for?

Laser hair removal works best on hair that is darker than the skin, because the light needs the pigment in the hair. Blonde, red, grey or white hair contains little of it and often barely responds.

When laser hair removal is not (yet) possible

In these situations we postpone the treatment or advise against it: pregnancy or breastfeeding; tanned skin, recent sunbed use or self-tanner on the area; photosensitising medication, isotretinoin or other skin medication; an infection, wound, eczema or cold sore on the area; epilepsy that can be triggered by light; a tendency to keloids or poor wound healing

How many laser hair removal sessions do you need?

How many sessions you need varies from person to person. Often it is six to eight sessions, sometimes more; on the face and with hormone-sensitive hair the number can be higher. There are usually four to eight weeks between two sessions, depending on the area: hair on the face often grows back faster than on the legs.

What results can you expect?

After each session the treated hairs usually fall out within one to three weeks. Sometimes it looks as if they are still growing, but usually they are being pushed out of the skin. For most people, a little less hair grows back after each session.

Preparing for your treatment

Preferably shave the area the day before, so no hair sticks out above the skin. Avoid waxing, plucking and hair removal cream in the weeks before and during the treatment period. Avoid sun, sunbeds and self-tanner in the weeks before a session. Come without make-up, deodorant or cream on the skin to be treated. Always report new medication, a pregnancy or changes in your skin before the next session.

Aftercare after laser hair removal

Right after the treatment your skin may be red and feel as if you have been in the sun. You sometimes see small bumps around the hair follicles. This usually settles within a few hours to a day, but it varies from person to person.

Side effects and risks of laser hair removal

Laser hair removal works with light and heat, so it is never completely without risk. Redness and mild swelling are normal and temporary. Less often, small blisters, scabs, temporarily lighter or darker skin or irritated hair follicles can occur. The chance is higher on tanned or darker skin. Rarely, fine hairs around the treated area actually start to grow more.
